Photopocolypse

On this episode, spured by a reader/listener email, Myke and I discuss photo management. Basically, we have some ideas about this stuff but no solid answers. What to use, how to deal with the deluge… We have more questions than answers. That said, there are some strategies I’ve been thinking about surrounding my own situation.

Plus, we mention a couple of other camera apps for the iPhone that were are liking lately.

Items discussed in this episode are:

Year Two

On this episode, we reflect on the two year anniversary of Minimal Mac. For those that don’t know, the website spawned the Enough podcast. We cover some of our favorite post from the last year but I take a diversion to talk about the famine crisis in the Horn of Africa and how important a reminder it is to us all to be thankful for what we have. For everything we take, someone else must give.

Also, sorry about the construction sounds. It’s that time of year at my place.

Where We Work

In response to a listener request, we discuss our working environments. Our desks, the space they are in, etc. Why it works (or doesn’t) for us. What would constitute our ideal setup. Our main Macs (and our iPads) and how we use them. This, of course, leads to continued discussion on how things are going with the 11 inch MacBook Air.

Some of the items discussed:

Trusted

In this instalment, we discuss how Apple’s App Store model actually gives them a competitive advantage to which not much press has been given. It creates a trusted computing environment. One in which the safety, security, and even interaction with the device and the applications on it are virtually guaranteed problem free. While this is great for consumers, it is even better for business and enterprise. And when you position iOS from the perspective of a trusted computing environment — an argument Android (due to it's "open" nature) can't make — well, let’s just say Apple is doing very well with iOS in the business world. So if you think they are not going to bring the same thing to the desktop with the Mac App Store you have another thing coming.

Baked In

We discuss the difference between native and non-native and why some companies claiming that their apps are "native" to the Mac OS are, in fact, not.

Rambling

Myke and I generally record in batches, every other Tuesday, three or four shows at a time. But, often times, we spend a good 20 to 30 minutes catching up with each other and discuss a ton of other topics that never make it to the show. Well, I thought it might be interesting so this time we recorded it.

The variety of links below I think are pretty indicative of how these catch-ups usually go:

  • Icebird for iPhone
  • Twitter for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store

Stuff I Love: Reeder

It’s my main RSS feed reader on my Mac, iPad, and iPhone. Has a ton of features but each implemented in such a way as to improve the experience, not detract from it.

Beyond The Homescreen

In episode three, we discussed iOS minimalism and how our home screens were set up. In this episode, we dive into what’s on our other screens and some of the apps there we find useful. Plus, an update on Myke’s commitment to practice some iOS minimalism of his own.

The apps mentioned are:

Bi-Polar disorder is not all parties and porn stars. It's a very serious and mysterious illness for which there is no real cure. There are, however, many ways to cope with it. Here's mine.

Cyborgs and Second Selves

In this episode, I follow up on a recent post on Minimal Mac about my increasing comfort with erasing because the technology is becoming smart enough to never forget. This is just the starting point as the conversation takes several interesting directions and becomes our longest episode to date.
